TL;DR: (How to recruit leaders)

  • Do your homework on requirements be very clear and articulate about the technical and product requirements to be successful for the role.
  • Understand the team that you are hiring for and their needs. Bucket them in S1-S4 depending upon where the team fits and associate the risks accordingly.
  • Sell it effectively by stating the opportunity, impact and KPI/OKR associated with the role.
  • Don’t sell the solution, sell the opportunity. Always remember, an effective manager finds smarter people to solve the problems more effectively than one would have thought.
  • Dont pigeon hole the role as tech, product, process or people only role. Share what is the outcome seek and just listen!

John is on a mission to hire a manager, he opens up a req, posts a very generic job description and hopes for the best. He gets a lot of candidates and since it is a managerial job he knows how to evaluate the candidate based on his “gut instincts”. As a hiring manager John has a good recipe/process on how to spot, evaluate and recruit good engineers. He uses tools like technical interviews, GitHub checkins, NALSD, discussion on RFCs, but when it comes to hiring management he trusts his “gut”.
