One on One’s Expectations
The Manager-Employee (M-E)relationship is critical for the organization to be successful. It isn’t an exaggeration to say no one wants to be around people they don’t care about, relate to, respect, admire or see as enablers. ME relationship is no different. It is a two-way street, where both the individuals want to help the other. Managers think about the environment the employee is getting at work, outside of work and try to understand what role can they play to make it better. Employee wants to be candid about what is going on in their space, in the ecosystem and what the manager should be aware of.
A successful 1:1 is where relationships are built on trust and mutual respect. It is not a status or project update. Use this time most effectively.
Employee’s Perspective
An employee should see this time as “their” time to ask questions about them, about the project, future, past, company or the industry. Share your point of view and how you feel.
What I want out of a 1:1
- Know how I am doing, what is going well and what is not.
- Know how the org is doing, I want to know how the company is doing.
- Know what your goals are and how are you progressing towards those
- Understand the big picture of what I am working…
