This is why you want to be a platform company

<This is still work in progress >

When we think of solutions, we think of them as an independent identity, something that can stand on its own, something that will solve a problem or a collection of problems really well. This is the mindset that fails us at times. We live in a connected world, there are gaps or unmet needs in this ecosystem. Sometimes we need to extend it (incremental innovation) or explore areas where the customer didn't even know they needed it (disruptive innovation)

Once teams start to see the world as a digital ecosystem and their offering/capability as a piece in the puzzle they evolve into a platform. Products start enabling more journeys while adding value by enriching the customer experience.

A platform mindset is not about tech or exposing APIs or data or any standard specification. It is all about how the offering becomes a catalyst and focuses on journeys versus just solving a painpoint.

Certain products ( disruptive innovation) create categories by extending the ecosystem and then evolve into platforms ( salesforce, Uber, Airbnb)

rather than the product telling the customer what they can do, platforms rely on customers customizing the experience to meet their needs.

There are certain attributes that we have consistently seen across platforms

  • Extensible
  • Flexible
  • Composable
