How to make platforms more effective (2/3)
4 min readMay 28, 2022
In the last blog, we talked about Why Build Platforms, and now let’s cover how to create effective platforms.
Blog series —
- Blog-1 → How platforms help
- Blog-2 → How to approach platforms to make them more effective
- Blog-3 → What causes platforms to slow the teams down.
- Blog-4 → when should you start investing in building out a platform.
Analogies are a good way to draw parallels and inspiration from paradigms that we comprehend well. Let’s use shipping as an example.
Job to be done: ship the package from source to destination.
Inside out perspective
The process is broken down into three milestones:
- The first mile: Collect the data/info/package from the customer. High touch experience
- The middle mile: Focused on the economy of scale.
- The last mile: Focused on end-to-end traceability, resiliency, and reliability.
The service provider gets to decide where the first mile ends, the middle mile starts and ends, and the same thing for the last mile. There are no wrong answers, it is all reliant on how you want your business to scale.
